Good morning, Saint John! The worst of the cold may be behind us, but take it easy out there while shovelling this morning. Just last week, LA Rams nose tackle Poona Ford was putting cayenne pepper in his socks to stay warm. Apparently it works, but can’t say the same when it comes to winning games. 🥶

Here’s the lowdown for the day:

  • 55 new homes on the east side 🏗️

  • SJ Sign reminds us how it began 🕯️

  • Hamlet Live from London 👑

Let’s get into it!

NEWS NOTES

🏘️ More homes on the east side

A proposal to expand Glenview Mobile Home Park on Saint John’s east side is heading to council, with plans to add about 55 new mini-homes near the end of Rex Hurley Boulevard. City planners have already given it a thumbs up, saying the expansion fits the surrounding neighbourhood and responds to real demand.

The park filled up fast over the last two years, flipping from a handful of empty lots to full capacity, and supporters are calling this a practical slice of affordable housing. A public hearing is set for Feb. 9, where neighbours will get their say before council makes the call. ($)

🏡 Rural residents get a say

If you live in places like Westfield, Norton, or St. Martins, the Fundy Regional Service Commission is starting work on a new Rural Plan and they want local input before anything gets written. A community survey is now open, giving residents a chance to weigh in on growth, development, and what does or doesn’t belong near their homes.

Why it matters: without a plan, communities have less say over what gets built and where. The province requires all areas to have a plan in place by 2028, and this one starts with locals first.

🕯️ It started with words

As the world marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a UNB historian is offering a reminder that feels especially timely: the Holocaust didn’t begin with camps, it began with words. Dr. Cheryl Fury says hateful rhetoric and the slow “othering” of groups is where it starts.

🪑 Have a seat at the table

The City of Saint John is looking for residents to fill upcoming openings on a wide range of boards and committees, including Planning, Heritage, the public library, Rockwood Park, Saint John Energy, and Port La Tour Development Authority.

Applications are open now and due February 2, with the city encouraging people from across the community to put their names forward and help shape how local services and spaces are guided.
