Good morning, Saint John! Today is What If Pets Had Thumbs Day, which feels like a dangerous thought experiment for a Tuesday. Would they use them for good? Open doors, get their own treats or maybe even text us back. Or evil? Unlock the fridge, drive up our Amazon bill by ordering new chew toys or just change the Netflix password out of spite….

Here’s the lowdown for the day:

  • That $100 Might Be Fake 💵

  • NB’s future in the ground 🪨

  • Come From Away skips SJ 🌟

Here we go!

Théophile is a husband, father, and volunteer who is working hard to build his life in the Saint John Region. From PRUDE to ConnexionWorks, his impact can be felt across the community.

NEWS NOTES

⛏️ Digging for the Future

The province flew to Toronto this week to tell the mining world New Brunswick is officially ready to rock

Premier Susan Holt and Natural Resources Minister John Herron unveiled a new minerals strategy aimed at making the province more competitive and, in their words, investment-ready. In other words…come dig in.

There’s renewed buzz around tungsten north of Fredericton, zinc and silver near Bathurst, manganese in Woodstock, plus shiny new interest in lithium and gold. A modernized Mining Act is coming too, meant to speed things up while keeping environmental rules and Indigenous partnerships in place.

The province thinks what’s under our feet could help power the clean-energy future…and the local economy along with it.

💵 Funny Money Alert

Whether you’re running a till, or just a big shot peeling off hundreds at the checkout, take a second look.

The RCMP are warning about counterfeit $100 bills circulating in New Brunswick after a business unknowingly accepted one that looked and felt convincing.

But there was one slight problem…tiny words on the silver strip that read “Prop Money.”

If you ever want to be sure that the cash you have in your pocket is legit, be sure to check for these signs:

• The clear window should have sharp metallic images that look embedded, not printed on.
• Real bills have raised ink you can feel.
• Serial numbers should be clean and evenly spaced.
• And if it literally says Prop Money, that means it is.

Police say counterfeiters rely on busy moments to pass off fakes, so always make sure you take your time and review your bills.

🌕 Blood Worm Moon Over Saint John

If you’re up early this morning, glance west when you’re done reading SJ Today. Part of a lunar eclipse will be visible over Saint John, and around 5:50am the moon will start to dim and take on that reddish “blood moon” glow. Peak viewing here is about 6:57am, just before sunrise washes it out.

We won’t get full totality. So don’t expect some big fiery ball, but just a nice little enhancement in the morning sky…Still cool.

You don’t need eclipse glasses. Just a clear western view. Hills are good but trees are bad. If you’re looking west but only see your neighbours shed, their storage solution has completely ruined it.

The next full lunar eclipse visible here isn’t until 2029. So if the sky cooperates, this could be your pre-work cosmic coffee companion.

Saint John is Canada’s most Irish city, so celebrating St. Patrick’s Day uptown is basically responsible citizenship.

Join SJ Today for the Leprechaun Leap, a coordinated St. Paddy’s adventure across 17 uptown venues. Live local music added this year, themed specials and a full day of green, all while raising funds for surgical excellence initiatives at the Saint John Regional Hospital.

Tokens can be used for select partner beverages at each location, and at some venues they can also be redeemed for non-alcoholic drinks or food. There’s no requirement to hit every stop. This isn’t a pub crawl. It’s a choose-your-own Irish adventure.
