NEWS NOTES

🦺 Main Street makeover kicks off Monday

If you thought the Harbour Bridge lane shuffle was a treat, just wait until Main Street joins the fun. Starting Monday, May 5, traffic between Union and Chesley will be squeezed down to one lane each way for a full 16 weeks…yep, 24/7. It’s all part of the city’s glow-up plan for Main Street, with new bike lanes, better crosswalks, smarter lights, and safer intersections. Pedestrians can still strut the sidewalks. Westsiders heading uptown this summer? Might be quicker to pack a lunch and walk Harbour Passage.

Despite the temporary headache, this is a solid upgrade that’ll pay off in a smoother, safer, and smarter Main Street. Check out some of the original plans and renderings here.

LOCAL BUSINESS

šŸœ The Umami Kid is coming to Germain Street

The team behind The Bubbly Cup is trading boba for broth with plans to open a brand new Japanese ramen and bento shop called The Umami Kid at 26 Germain, the former home of VEGolution. Owners Eunice Gabdyssamet and her husband Sanat aren’t new to this…Eunice used to manage a Japanese restaurant and knows her way around a bowl of noodles. Renovations kick off soon, with a July debut in their sights and a special theme that promises something Saint John hasn’t seen before. Summer 2025 will be slurp season!

šŸ¦øā€ā™€ļø Free Comics and Cake? Say Less.

Hero’s Beacon is throwing its favourite party of the year this weekend, and yes, there will be free comics, cake, popcorn, sales, and raffles — basically everything but the Bat-Signal.

It’s all part of Free Comic Book Day, happening at 25 Charlotte Street in Uptown Saint John. Whether you're a seasoned collector, a casual reader, or just really into free snacks, this is your moment to shine (or at least snack and browse).

🄃 On this day in NB history…

May 1, 1917: Prohibition kicks in across New Brunswick, banning the sale of liquor…unless, of course, you needed it for "medicinal, scientific, sacramental, or mechanical purposes." That’s right, if you had a sore throat, a prayer group, or maybe a squeaky wagon wheel, you might have had a shot at a stiff drink. The dry days lasted a full decade… though let’s be honest, some ā€œmedicine cabinetsā€ were likely a little too well-stocked.
