🪲 Ticked Off Yet?

Good Morning Saint John, have you ever felt the shame of hearing you let your dog get chubby? Oof. Our girl Frankie swears she’s just big-boned, but either way…we’ll be pounding Harbour Passage all summer to make it up to her (and honestly, I need it too). 🐶

Here’s what we’re digging into this morning:

  • New traffic infrastructure arriving soon 🚧

  • Protect you and your pets from ticks 🌿

  • Let’s talk local theatre 🎟️

Let’s get it!

NEWS NOTES

🚦 Cushions, Crosswalks, and a Few More Parking Spots

Saint John’s traffic plan for 2025 isn’t glamorous, but it is useful. We’ll be getting more speed cushions, more accessible crosswalks, and a handful of new on-street accessible parking spots uptown.

The city’s public works director says they’re tripling the number of traffic-calming cushions, upgrading 11 crosswalks with new audio signals and curb cuts, and squeezing in five accessible parking spots where it makes sense.

Advocates say it’s a start, but let’s just say nobody’s popping champagne over the pace of progress. (The province’s 2040 accessibility target got an eye-roll from just about everyone.) Still, safer sidewalks, slower traffic, and a few new spaces to park with dignity? It’s something. ($)

🪲 Don’t Let a Tick Ruin Your Summer

Look, we hate to bug you… but tick season is officially back. These little bloodsuckers love tall grass, warm skin, and a free ride on your pant leg…and they’re not just gross, they can spread Lyme disease.

The province says prevention is key: stick to trails, wear long sleeves (even if it’s 28°C), and do a full tick check after any outdoor fun. And yes, your dog counts too.

If one of the clingy creeps does get you, remove it carefully and watch for symptoms. New this year: some pharmacies can now help you out with Lyme prevention meds after a high-risk bite. Ticks might be tiny, but they’re not messing around.

🌍 One City, Many Cultures

On June 27, Saint John gets colourful. Canadian Multiculturalism Day is coming, and the city’s lighting up with food, flags, music, and culture from around the world.

It all starts with a flag raising at 1pm in front of City Hall, then things spread out across three lively locations: PRUDE Inc. in the morning, Saint John Newcomers Centre in the evening, and YMCA Newcomer Connections just a bit later.

Whether you’re representing your heritage in traditional dress or just showing up to take it all in, the message is simple: this city is stronger because of its many voices. And this is the day to celebrate all of them.

🛼 Who Gets the Ice Time? You Decide

The Town of Quispamsis is rewriting the playbook on how it shares its community spaces, think rinks, courts, and fields, and they want your input.

A new Recreational Facility Allocation Policy is in the works, and it’ll decide how these spots are booked and who gets what time slot. So whether you’re a pickleball pro, a soccer parent, or just tired of fighting over gym space, now’s your chance to shape the future of fun in QP.

The survey takes about 6 minutes, that’s less time than it takes to find a parking spot at the qplex.

EVENTS
What’s Happenin’

🎭 Theatre Talk

The spotlight’s warming up, the jazz hands are twitching, and Saint John’s stages are about to get busy. From high-flying adventures to toe-tapping revues, here’s your front row seat to the local theatre buzz this month.

ENCORE by Act III Productions | June 10-12
It’s a Port City musical theatre reunion, and everyone’s invited. ENCORE brings together 27 familiar local voices…think dinner theatre regulars, Imperial stage vets, and even a few you might know from around town, for a jam-packed night of Broadway hits. Backed by a live four-piece band and served with a cash bar, it’s all happening at the Kent Theatre at 7:30pm nightly. Curtain’s up June 10, 11, and 12.

Peter Pan: A Musical Adventure | June 12-14
This isn’t your typical trip to Neverland, think pirates, pixie dust, and a whole lot of 80s throwback tunes. InterAction’s panto-style Peter Pan flies into St. Malachy’s for a high-energy, laugh-packed musical that’s built for kids and the kid-at-heart. Expect big hair, bigger dance moves, and plenty of chances to cheer (or boo). Shows run nightly at 7:30pm from June 12-14.

Broadway, Baby | June 24
From Fiddler to Footloose, this musical theatre revue hits all the high notes. Young performers from Alison Dawn Voice & Music light up the BMO Studio stage with songs from Broadway’s brightest eras, golden-age gems, modern-day showstoppers, and everything in between. It’s a joyful, toe-tapping tour through stage history, with doors at 7:15pm and curtain at 7:30pm.

Harland Williams Live | June 26
Rocketman himself is landing in Saint John. Comedian and actor Harland Williams, yes, that guy from Dumb and Dumber, Half Baked, and Something About Mary, hits the Imperial stage for a night of totally unfiltered stand-up. Expect the weird, the wild, and probably a dolphin impression or two. Show starts at 7pm, with tickets starting at $51.

REVIVAL: Free Screening & Panel | June 27
Zombies, mystery, and a hometown connection, what more could you want on a Friday night? REVIVAL, the new TV series filmed right here in Saint John, is screening its first two episodes for free at Centre scolaire Samuel-de-Champlain. Expect a short panel, a cash bar, and maybe even a glimpse of someone you know on screen. It runs 7-9pm, and under-18s need a parent in tow. Tickets are limited!

Ukrainian Legends | June 27
Take a journey through centuries of song, story, and spirit as Ukrainian Legends brings folk music, dance, and mystical tradition to the BMO Studio stage. Narrated by the legendary Nestor the Chronicler, this one-night show offers a powerful tribute to Ukraine’s cultural roots—performed by local and international artists. It starts at 7pm and promises soul, history, and some serious stomping.
