NEWS NOTES

🍎 Two local teachers earn provincial honours

Report cards are still a couple of weeks away, but two local teachers already know they've passed with flying colours.

Heidi Jardine Stoddart of Quispamsis Middle School and Kerri Titus of Harbour View High School were among the recipients of this year's Minister's Excellence in Education Awards, which recognize educators from across New Brunswick for professionalism, innovation and commitment to student success.

🏒 Islanders coaching duo headed to SJ

The Sea Dogs have made some staff changes and we’re guessing they had to cover bridge tolls.

Saint John has named Jim Hulton as the 13th head coach in franchise history after 11 seasons behind the bench in Charlottetown, where he racked up 380 QMJHL wins, two coach-of-the-year awards and a trip to the league final in 2022. Coming with him is longtime assistant Guy Girouard, who spent the last decade coaching alongside Hulton and developing defencemen.

For Sea Dogs fans, it could be a signal the franchise wants to get back into the playoff conversation sooner rather than later. The Islanders' coaching staff has officially crossed the bridge.

🎤 Local singers get their shot

The show is now in its seventh year and features performers backed by a professional Canadian rock band whose members have played alongside artists including Burton Cummings, Big Wreck and Moist. Auditions are open now, and organizers say they're looking for everything from country and pop to rock, ballads and crooners.

LOCAL BUSINESS

💻 From a Saint John judo mat to Silicon Valley

A Saint John tech company founded by two UNB grads who first met on a judo mat has been acquired by California-based A10 Networks.

TrojAI launched in 2019 when James Stewart and Stephen Goddard set out to tackle a growing problem: keeping artificial intelligence from doing things it shouldn't. Since then, the company has raised more than $12 million, grown to about 25 employees and landed clients ranging from government agencies to Fortune 500 companies.

The company kept its headquarters in Saint John while expanding to Fredericton and Boston, proving you don't need a Bay Area postal code to build an AI company. Better yet, founders say the company's 22-person team will remain in Saint John and could continue to grow under its new ownership. Financial terms of the sale weren't disclosed.
