NEWS NOTES
🪕 AREA 506 leans folk this summer
AREA 506 is trying something a little different this year, carving out a folk-focused weekend with AREA 506 as Folk on August 28 and 29. The lineup leans into storytelling and folk-driven sets, with nine acts including The East Pointers, Lennie Gallant, and The Barr Brothers across a Friday night show and two Saturday sessions.
And the look of this one might seem a little familiar. The festival poster features work from late Saint John sculptor John Hooper, pulling in his People Waiting figures that once lined King Street and now sit inside City Hall.
AREA 506 Marketing Director Sarah Tippett says “A folk festival is about placemaking…celebrating art, storytelling and local heritage. The Hooper artwork is all of those things to Saint John. And we're so pleased the Hooper family lent their support to the idea.”
Weekend passes are $79, with tickets going on sale later this morning.
⚾ Alpines gearing up for another summer
It may not be summer yet, but our local boys are getting ready.
The Saint John Alpines are ramping up for opening day, with their full home schedule now out and another season set for Memorial Field. It’s a mix of afternoon starts and some Thursday night classics on the west side.
They’ve also got a fundraiser lined up May 2 at Shooters, which is usually a pretty good sign the bats aren’t far behind.
💪 New workout concept coming to Rothesay
A new fitness studio is on the way to Rothesay, and it’s not the usual gym setup. Redefined Plus is opening at 47 Clark Road, bringing the Lagree method with it.
“We both grew up here, so it’s always been an area we’ve remained closely connected to,” said Nicole Merrithew, who’s launching the studio with Jason Stanley. “We saw an opportunity to bring a more intentional approach to movement in the area, which is really where Redefined Plus began.”
Lagree is still pretty new to the area, and the focus here is on keeping it approachable for a wide range of people.
No official opening date just yet, but Nicole says she’s excited for classes to begin.
