Young workers hit the assembly line 🏭
New Brunswick is spending $2.1 million to help young people discover that manufacturing involves more than hard hats and lunch whistles.
The new Youth in Manufacturing program will connect up to 300 young New Brunswickers with paid work and training over the next three years. Participants can earn five industry-recognized microcredentials while gaining experience with small and medium-sized manufacturers.
The province expects roughly 13,000 manufacturing job openings between 2025 and 2034. That covers everything from food processing and wood products to machinery and advanced technology.
Rothesay’s Cassie McCallum is going pro 🏒
Turns out, trash-can lids make pretty good goalie gear. At least, they did for Rothesay’s Cassie McCallum.
At six, McCallum stood in her family’s driveway wearing a life preserver and makeshift blockers while her brothers fired tennis balls her way. She went on to win four Atlantic university titles and a national bronze medal with UNB.
Sixteen years after that driveway debut, she’s a professional goalie in Türkiye. ($)
Art tour saves Saint John for last 🎨
The province’s newest art collection is taking the scenic route to Saint John.
Twenty-two works by New Brunswick artists have begun a year-long tour of the province, including six pieces by four Indigenous artists. The province spent $60,000 acquiring the collection.
After stops in Bouctouche, Fredericton, Sussex, Florenceville and Moncton, the tour will finish at the Saint John Arts Centre from September 3 to October 22, 2027.

Bobby’s Hospice Memorial Walk | September 19
Families and friends can walk in memory of someone they love while supporting Bobby’s Hospice Saturday at Rockwood Park. Registration opens at 10am, followed by opening ceremonies at 11am, the walk at 11:20am and a barbecue after everyone returns. Participants are encouraged to collect pledges in support of the compassionate end-of-life care provided by Bobby’s Hospice.
Co-Workers First Workshop | September 23
Workplace leaders can learn practical ways to support employees and build a healthier workplace during a full-day Canadian Mental Health Association workshop Wednesday from 9am-5pm at the Nick Nicolle Community Centre. Participants must attend the entire session to receive a certificate. Registration is $38.07.
Sip & Savour | September 26
More than 20 local vendors will pour samples of beer, wine, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks at Market Square Saturday from 6-9pm, with charcuterie, auctions, raffles and a souvenir sipping glass also on the menu. VIP admission is $150 and begins at 6pm with exclusive seminars, while $75 general admission starts at 6:30pm. Proceeds support residents of Rocmaura Nursing Home.*
Loch Lomond Villa Golf Tournament | October 2
Golfers of every skill level can hit the links for Loch Lomond Villa’s second annual tournament Friday from 8:45am-4pm at Hampton Golf Club. Presented by Lawtons Drugs, the tournament raises money to improve life for Villa residents. Registration is $175 for an individual or $700 for a team.
Pay Equity Act Public Consultation | October 6
New Brunswickers can have their say on the province’s Pay Equity Act during a public consultation Tuesday at NBCC Saint John. The English session runs from 9-10:30am, followed by the French session at 10:30am, with translation available and participants welcome to attend all or part of the morning.
