NEWS NOTES

đş35 Years of Impact and Inspiration at the Y
It was an evening of community spirit and generosity at the 35th annual Red Triangle Award Gala last night, hosted at the Saint John Y and presented by Emera. The event raised $110,000 for the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswickâs Strong Communities Campaign, helping ensure local Y programs stay accessible to everyone who needs them.
This yearâs Red Triangle Award went to Janet Thompson-Price, a longtime Y supporter and immigration lawyer whose advocacy has changed policy and lives alike. The Leader to Watch Award was given to Cameron Keyes, a 25-year-old whose quiet leadership and genuine belief in inclusion have made a lasting impact across the region. Both gave inspiring speeches that reflected a deep, instinctive commitment to building a community where everyone belongs.
Now 35 years in, the Red Triangle Awards keep reminding us of the way the Y can inspire, and build, a stronger community.
đ Trail Tweaks at Rockwood
Some changes are coming to the cityâs favourite maze of trails at Rockwood Park. And if youâve ever jogged, biked, or let your pup run wild off-leash (shoutout to the best spot in the region for that), youâll want the heads up.
Two trails - Carnage and Deer Trax - are getting a reroute this spring and summer. Why? Because they currently sneak onto private property, and the cityâs tightening things up to keep all trails on public land. So expect new maps, a few shifts, and some temporary signs to follow.
This doesnât mean the end of your favourite rugged run⌠it just means the path to it might wiggle a little. As long as Owen Lake to Sponge Bob doesnât change, weâre still in good dog walkinâ shape.
đ Sea Dogs Take First Pick in 2025 QMJHL Draft
The Saint John Sea Dogs have won the 2025 QMJHL draft lottery and will pick first overall at the June 6 draft in Quebec City. Itâs the first time since 2019 that the Sea Dogs have had the #1 pick. With six balls in play (28.6% chance), luck was definitely on their side after finishing 17th in the standings.
Victoriaville will pick second, Halifax grabs third, and the newly minted Newfoundland Regiment will pick fifth.
The draft takes place in Quebec City on June 6-7.
