NEWS NOTES
🚌 Transit Is Back Uptown
Good news, Uptown riders: starting today (October 20), King Street bus stops are back in action. Kings Square North, King Street, and City Hall are open again…plus a new stop at Kings Square South by the Admiral Beatty.
North and west buses will hang at Kings Square North, south and east buses across from City Hall. Temporary stops on Water Street and King Street East are retiring. Watch for more pedestrians and enjoy the ride!
🎓 Saint John youth get a boost with READY
Saint John’s young people are getting a new launchpad. The Saint John Learning Exchange has kicked off READY, a three-year, $4.4-million program designed to help 200 local youth aged 15–29 get back into school, training, or work. READY pairs hands-on learning, direct employer connections, trades opportunities, and mental health supports, all built with input from youth themselves.
It’s about giving youth the tools, connections, and confidence to step into meaningful careers.
⚡ Saint John’s power utility plots path to carbon-free
Saint John Energy’s Zero30 initiative has caught national attention. The utility’s plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2030 while keeping electricity affordable was named a 2026 Clean50 Top Project last week. The roadmap mixes local renewable generation, battery storage, and smart-grid upgrades, and includes input from community and Indigenous partners. Launched in 2023, Zero30 builds on existing projects like the Burchill Wind Project and New Brunswick’s largest solar hub, the Menahqesk Kisuh Energy Hub, set for 2027.
Mini-putt madness hits Uptown ⛳
Big shout-out to everyone who joined the 31st Germain Street Open on Saturday! From Cowpolks to astronauts and Mario cart speedsters, Uptown was full of costumes, laughter, and 19 tricky holes. Congrats to all the teams, hosts, and spectators for making it a fun day and for supporting L’Arche Saint John while you were at it!
