Good morning Saint John! It’s Earth Day, which feels like a good time to step outside and remember we actually live in a pretty great place. If you’re looking to do something small but useful, you’ll find a handful of local cleanups and events happening around the city today in our events section.

Here’s what we’re hearing today:

  • Park’s open again 🥾

  • Detour season begins 🚦

  • Do something for Earth 🌱

Let’s get it!

You know the one.

The space you use every day, but it never quite feels clean, comfortable, or up to date. It works… but it’s not a place you actually enjoy being in.

Whether it’s a tub-to-shower conversion, a new bathtub, or a clean, modern wall system, Bathcraft can help make your bathroom finally feel right.

NEWS NOTES

🌿 Sure signs of summer in Saint John

There are two things you can always count on when the nice weather is on its way… the Irving Nature Park starts to come back to life, and a part of the Harbour Bridge gets closed off.

After being completely closed last week, the road into the Irving Nature Park is back open, which means hikers and cyclists are officially back in business. The main parking lot is good to go, though the full loop and access to the Children’s Forest are still getting their final tune-up before the full opening in early May.

Meanwhile, the annual tradition on Harbour Bridge continues. The Chesley Drive on-ramp to Highway 1 is shutting down starting April 27 as part of this year’s rehab, and it’s expected to stay that way until mid-November.

Transit riders will feel it too, with Route 15W detouring off the Chesley ramp and skipping westbound service on Main Street North until November.

There’s more here than you might expect at the YMCA.

From group fitness classes and a fully equipped fitness floor to swimming pools and gymnasiums, there are plenty of ways to stay active in one place.

Try a class, explore the fitness floor, or drop into an open gym session to see what works for you. The team is there to help you get going with confidence. Financial assistance is also available, so membership stays accessible to everyone.

If you’ve been thinking about it, this is a good time to check it out.

🌎 EARTH DAY EVENTS

Earth Day Community Cleanup SJNC | April 22
The Saint John Newcomers Centre hosts a 12pm meet-up at 75 Prince William Street before heading out together for a street clean-up in the ACAP area. It’s part environmental effort, part community connection, with a focus on meeting new people while giving back in a simple, hands-on way.

Rothesay Community Clean Up 2026 | April 18-22
Rothesay’s annual clean-up runs over several days, giving schools, businesses, families, and friend groups plenty of time to get involved. Gloves and garbage bags can be picked up at Town Hall during business hours, and collected litter can be dropped at the dumpster set up at the Rothesay Arena parking lot. Good excuse to get outside and do a little spring cleanup with a purpose.

Lorneville Community Clean-Up | April 25
Explore Lorneville marks its 10th annual clean-up with a morning meet-up at the Lorneville Community Centre at 9am. Volunteers will fan out across roads and trails with supplies provided, plus a quick safety rundown before heading out. It’s a simple way to shake off winter and leave the area a little better than you found it.

Hampton Earth Day Clean-Up | April 25
Hampton’s Environment Advisory Committee is calling in some extra hands for a 2pm clean-up starting at Town Square. Bags and gloves are covered, and the plan is simple, spread out, pick up, and make a dent. Open to anyone looking to spend a couple hours doing something useful outdoors.

Earth Day Community Clean Up with ACAP Saint John | April 22
A mid-day clean-up starting with a 12pm meet-up and briefing at PRUDE Inc. in Market Square before heading out at 1pm. It’s a hands-on way to pitch in locally, with a focus on protecting green spaces and connecting with others doing the same. Wear something you don’t mind getting dirty and bring solid footwear.

Hands in the Current Earth Day Screening | April 22
A quieter Earth Day option at the West Branch Library with a 6:30pm screening of Hands in the Current, a documentary focused on work, water, and home. It’s part of the International Migration Environmental Film Festival circuit and runs about an hour, easy watch, thoughtful subject, no cost to get in.

Here are some more events sent to us by our readers. Don’t forget to submit your events any time by clicking here.

The Comedy Section | April 25
A 3pm all-ages comedy show lands at the Saint John Free Public Library with Chris Hovey headlining, Katelin Dean featuring, and a local host keeping things moving. It’s free to attend, but space is limited, so you’ll need to register ahead by calling 506-643-7236, emailing [email protected], or signing up in person.

Coffee & Conversation | April 24
A 10-11am session focused on the work of the Saint John Newcomers Centre, led by Lina Gharbiya. It’s a casual, open-to-all conversation about supporting newcomers in the community, with a bit of insight into how that work actually plays out on the ground.
