Good morning, Saint John! Supper time last night felt pretty normal… maybe a little cool, but nothing wild. Then out of nowhere, snow. Not a storm, just enough to make you question everything for a minute. Anyway, we’re done with that now. Time to lock in a proper stretch of double-digit temps and act like spring knows where we live.
Here’s the lowdown for the day:
Science project goes national 🧫
River rising, not roaring yet 🧭
Audition tape due tonight 🎬
Let’s get it!

NEWS NOTES
🧪 Saint John students take a shot at national STEM win
A group of students at St. Malachy’s Memorial High School is in the national spotlight right now, landing as one of just eight finalists nationwide in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow STEM Challenge, with $50,000 on the line if they win.
Leading the charge is Melody Ovuakporoyecha and her AP Capstone team, who built a project around hydrogel biosensors. While that sounds like something out of a sci-fi lab to us, it’s real, and it’s headed in front of a panel of national judges this week.
“They build real research skills and apply them to real problems,” teacher Chris Stacey said, noting the project grew out of the school’s AP Seminar and AP Research pipeline.
There’s also a Fan Favourite award up for grabs, and it’s entirely vote-based. So you can help them out by clicking here and casting a quick vote, with $5,000 in Samsung tech on the line.
🏠 The Thorne Avenue site is now up and running
The new Bridge Housing site on Thorne Avenue is officially open, with residents already moving in.
It’s 14 private micro-suites set up for people coming out of homelessness. Each one has its own bathroom and kitchenette, with staff on site around the clock to help people get settled and move toward something permanent.
It sits next to the existing Green Zone, but this version leans more independent than the Neighbourly Homes setup while still keeping supports close.
Altogether, the city’s added 68 transitional units since last August. This one’s just the latest piece now actually in use.
🌊 River watch continues
Water levels are up, with advisory-level river watches in place for Saint John, Quispamsis, and Hampton. That’s still the “heads up” tier, not flooding, but upstream areas like Fredericton are expected to hit flood stage, which can ripple down.
Officials say now’s the time to be ready, not reactive. Have a plan, be prepared for 72 hours if needed, and stay off riverbanks. Fast currents, cold water, and debris make it riskier than it looks.
Nothing major locally right now, but this can change quickly. Keep an eye on River Watch for updates.

Coming Soon…
All My Sons | May 5
A West End production of Arthur Miller’s classic arrives on screen, filmed live and led by Bryan Cranston and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. The story follows a family whose wartime success starts to unravel under the weight of what it cost them. As long-buried decisions resurface, the tension builds into a slow, uncomfortable reckoning that still hits just as hard today.
