NEWS NOTES
š„ Big Throws, Big Action This Weekend in SJ!
This weekend, the Irving Oil Field House is hosting Atlantic Canadaās biggest ultimate frisbee tournament, Brick City Beatdown 2025. With 26 teams and 300 athletes from across the Maritimesārepresenting cities, universities, and leaguesāthis event is a whirlwind of competition, camaraderie, and serious disc-throwing skills.
Organizer Alex Downing says the tournament is a highlight for players and fans alike. āWeāve grown from 10 teams to 26 in just a few years. The energy is incredibleāthereās nothing else like it.ā Ultimateās unique culture plays a huge role in that energy. The game is entirely self-officiated, with players relying on mutual respect and spirit of the game to keep things fair. Add in high-speed sprints, jaw-dropping catches, and non-stop sideline excitement, and youāve got a sport thatās as thrilling to watch as it is to play.
Never seen ultimate before? Hereās your chance to get in on the action. Admission is free, the vibes are electric, and the competition is fierce. Swing by the tournament central booth for tips on must-watch matchups and grab some Saint John Ultimate merch to support the local club and remember your day. Alex promises,āItās an event unlike anything youāve seen before.ā
š„ Dry January Got a Little Easier
Those holding off on the hooch this month got a freebie yesterday, with no booze available at ANBL corporate stores. A point-of-sale system crash forced the doors to close, sending folks on a wild goose chase to agent locations or grocery stores to snag their wine, beer or whatever. Cannabis NB didnāt escape unscathed eitherāthey went full cash-only mode.
As of press time, ANBL stores were still out of commission, so if youāre thirsty, check the ANBL socials to see if theyāre back up and runningāor take the universeās not-so-subtle hint to stick with water this week. Cheers to tech glitches and empty glasses!

Script Happens is open to New Brunswickers with an original one-act play. Comedy, drama, or somewhere in betweenāif your script makes the cut, youāll see it performed on stage during the June showcase.
So, grab your laptop, pour some coffee, and let those ideas flow. Your masterpiece isnāt going to write itself! Get all the details and requirements before itās too late!
š£ Stay Safe On The Ice
While ice fishing season is officially here, itās crucial to stay safe out there. Ice is never 100% safe, and the province doesnāt measure thickness for recreational use, so make sure to check conditions before you go. Always let someone know your plans, wear appropriate clothing, and watch for ice color changesāblue is strong, while white and grey can mean danger.
Check out this handy guide from the province to ensure you're enjoying the frozen lakes and rivers safely, whatever youāre doing this winter. Fishing runs until March 31, with over 150 designated spots open for the season. Stay safe and enjoy the catch!
