⚡ NB Power: roast session live

In partnership with:

Good morning Saint John! It’s official…this was the driest summer on record here, with rainfall totals the lowest since weather tracking began back in 1870. In fact, it’s been so dry lately, even the seagulls look like they’d trade their dirty ol’ fries for a sip of Alpine. 🍺

Here’s what we’re squawking about this morning:

  • Rudolph’s rerouting, your float awaits 🛷

  • Bus fares creep, wallets sigh quietly 💸

  • Readers rule our events today 📅

Have a great Wednesday!

This Saturday, Loch Lomond Mitsubishi is throwing their 6th Annual Fall Fun Fair. From 11am-1pm you can take on two 60-foot inflatable obstacle courses, win prizes at carnival games, and load up on BBQ eats. Feeling lucky? Try to beat Jaymee at mini golf. If you do, you’ll snag one of just 25 golden tickets for a chance to win a car.

Entry is only $1 with proceeds going to charity. That single dollar gets you a meal, games, prizes, obstacle runs, and mini golf tries. Trevor the Entertainer will be hosting, spinning tunes, and keeping the fun rolling.

Loch Lomond Mitsubishi’s Fall Fun Fair is one afternoon only, so don’t miss it.

NEWS NOTES

🎅 Santa’s sleigh takes a new turn

We’re not saying you should be stringing Christmas lights in September… but they are definitely calling from the basement. And with that morning chill in the air, it’s clear the festive season isn’t far off. Saint John’s biggest holiday tradition is getting a shake-up this year.

The 72nd annual Santa Claus Parade hits the streets Saturday, November 15 at 6pm, starting at the Cruise Ship Terminals on Water Street, then linking back to the classic route up St. Patrick Street and across the viaduct to Main Street North and Lansdowne Avenue. This year’s theme is Animated Christmas, and here’s an early gift: no registration fees. Ready to roll? Register your float here.

🚌 Bus fares creeping up in 2026

No need to dig for extra quarters just yet, but Saint John Transit is nudging up its multi-ride fares in the new year. Starting January 1, 2026, monthly passes and 10-ride cards will climb by about 1.5%...so an adult monthly jumps to $83.50 (up $1.25), while a 10-ride card rises to $27.30 (up 40 cents). Single cash fares in the city will stay put at $3, but Comex riders will see a bump: $4.50 cash fare and a $132.95 monthly pass.

The transit folks say the hike helps cover rising costs like fuel and maintenance while they expand service and roll out new tech. Good news though if you use the SJTRides app, you’ll still snag a 5% discount per ride in 2026.

⚠️ Radon detected in some Grand Bay-Westfield homes

It’s silent, odourless, radioactive and showing up in homes across Grand Bay-Westfield. A new report from the 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge found that 28% of the homes tested had radon levels above Health Canada’s guideline. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, making testing the only way to know what’s in your own basement.

The fix is simple. A certified pro can install a system that cuts radon levels by 90% in a single day. Didn’t get one of the free kits? Test kits are available through the New Brunswick Lung Association.

💡Have your say on NB Power

Want to tell NB Power what’s on your mind? Here’s your chance. Saint John’s public engagement session is scheduled for tomorrow morning (September 11) from 11am-1pm at Dufferin Hall, Thistle-St. Andrews Curling Club.

Stay for the full session or pop in for a quick chat, translation available in both languages. Your input will help shape an interim report by the end of 2025, with final recommendations expected March 2026.

It’s your opportunity to air gripes, ask questions, or just see what your fellow Saint Johners think as the province reviews the future of the utility.
