Good morning, Saint John! Super Bowl weekend is here, the one day a year everyone becomes a football expert, a food critic, and a halftime show judge at the same time. I’m just looking forward to the garlic fingers being delivered 🍕.

Here’s the lowdown for the day:

  • The harbour walk gets longer legs 🌉

  • Maritime’s top of the class 🎒

  • First responders drop the gloves 🥅

Have a fantastic weekend!

NEWS NOTES

🚶 Harbour Passage might get longer

The city is floating early plans to stretch Harbour Passage all the way from Broad and Carmarthen up toward Rockwood Park, and they want public input before anything gets locked in.

Designers are sketching out new street layouts for Broad, Crown and Mount Pleasant, plus ideas for lighting, landscaping and pedestrian-friendly upgrades. The goal right now is a concept plan and cost roadmap that could shape future capital budgets.

🎓 UNB bragging rights

UNB just picked up a pretty shiny title. TIME magazine ranked it the top university in Atlantic Canada in its new global university list, putting the school 14th in the country and inside the top 300 worldwide.

That ranking covers both Fredericton and Saint John, which means our campus shares in the global nod. The scoring looked at research impact, innovation and global reach, not just size or reputation.

🏒 Badges hit the ice

TD Station turns into a first-responder showdown this weekend as police, firefighters and sheriffs from across New Brunswick duke it out in the Sea Dogs’ Battle of the Badges tournament. Teams from Saint John, Fredericton, KV, Oromocto and Codiac play round-robin all weekend, with the championship Sunday at 1:30pm.

The best part is, if you’ve got a ticket to the Sea Dogs game Friday or Saturday, tournament access is free. One ticket, a full weekend of hockey, and bragging rights on the line. Only in Saint John.

Oh and word on the street is the SJ firefighters will be bringin’ the heat…🔥

WHERE WERE WE WEDNESDAY? 📸

On Wednesday we showed a cheerful little bread-slinging figure and asked if you knew where it lives. That happy character is tucked inside the glass case at a west side legend…Bob’s Corner Takeout on Catherwood Street. It’s one of several quirky little items that regulars walk past without even noticing anymore. Only one reader nailed it. Shout out to Edgar D. for the buzzer-beater guess! And honestly, if it’s been a while since you’ve made the trip… consider this your fries reminder. Still some of the best in the city 🍟.
