NEWS NOTES

♻️ Compost Like a Champ (and Not Attract Rats the Size of Housecats)

Look, we all want to be eco-heroes this spring…tossing scraps in the green bin, bragging about our backyard compost piles, and pretending we meant to leave that banana peel on the counter for three days. But the City wants to gently remind us: there’s a fine line between being Earth-friendly and accidentally running a rodent buffet.

Saint John’s Solid Waste Department has dropped a springtime PSA with all the hot composting tips…from wrapping your food scraps in newspaper to soaking steel wool in bleach (aka rat kryptonite). You’ll also want to freeze your meat scraps until garbage day like they’re tiny trash popsicles and rinse that green cart like it owes you rent.

And if your green cart's looking like it lost a fight with a raccoon gang, you can always request a replacement at Fundy Recycles.

📚 More Teachers in Classrooms

The province is putting $85 million more into the education system this year, and this time it might actually mean more teachers in classrooms. Over 150 certified teachers in admin roles are heading back to schools, with boosts for support staff, behavioural mentors, and literacy help too.

Also new: $25 million for school breakfast and lunch programs. Because students need a full stomach to fuel their learning.

🏆 Top Clicks of the Week!

From burgers to big breaks, here’s what you couldn’t stop clicking this week…including a ramen joint that’s stirring the pot and a casting call that might make you famous(ish).

EVENTS
What’s Happenin’

Marsh Creek Cleanup | May 10
ACAP Saint John is calling on volunteers to roll up their sleeves and help clean one of the city’s most important waterways. The annual Marsh Creek Cleanup kicks off at the Irving Oil Field House with registration at 8:30am, followed by a community cleanup from 9am to noon. Expect litter, laughs, and the chance to win prizes, and don’t miss the free BBQ starting at 12pm. Whether you’re flying solo or bringing the whole crew, it’s a great way to meet new people, get a little muddy, and make a real impact. Just bring sturdy shoes and a water bottle, they’ve got the gloves.

Handmade with Heart Craft Sale | May 10
It’s a local artisan market with a cause, this craft sale supports the Grade 12 graduating class at Centre scolaire Samuel-de-Champlain. Swing by the school cafeteria between 10am and 3pm to browse 20+ local vendors, enter the gift basket raffle, and try your luck in the 50/50 draw. It’s perfectly timed for some last-minute Mother’s Day shopping, and all proceeds help send grads off in style.

Estate Planning Seminar | May 13
Thinking about your legacy? Rocmaura Foundation is hosting an estate planning seminar at Fundy Funeral Home from 4:30-6:30pm, with expert advice on wills, power of attorney, end-of-life planning, and estate investments. Presenters include legal, financial, and funeral service pros, plus there’s a chance to win a free will or POA from Mosher Chedore. A $20 donation is suggested (you’ll get a tax receipt!). Bring your questions and your curiosity.
