Good morning, Saint John! A rescue dog named Osito has become one of the breakout stars of the World Cup after showing up in a team jersey, sunglasses and a bicycle basket. Nice to see the internet remains focused on what matters.

Here’s the lowdown for the day:

  • Home is a starting line 🗝️

  • The classroom has trees 🌲

  • The show goes outdoors 🎬

NEWS NOTES

🏠 Keys to something bigger

There's a new set of keys changing hands in Saint John.

The Centre for Youth Care officially opened Mitchener Village on Monday, a new nine-unit supportive housing complex for young adults aged 19 to 25 who are at risk of homelessness. The first tenant received their keys during the grand opening, marking the start of move-ins at the fully furnished bachelor apartments.

The project combines affordable housing with on-site support services, helping residents transition to independent living. More than $1 million in federal and provincial funding helped bring the development to life, alongside support from local donors and Housing New Brunswick.

"For many young people, having a safe place to call home is the foundation that makes everything else possible," said executive director Karen Cummings. The Centre also used the grand opening to launch the Belonging Restored Fund, a new endowment through the Saint John Community Foundation that will support vulnerable youth into the future.

🌲West side preschool heads outdoors

A new tuition-free preschool program has opened on Saint John's west side.

Founder Lyra Howell calls the project her "life's dream" and says it was built around a simple idea…quality early learning should be accessible to every family.

Expect plenty of outdoor time. The program plans to use the forests surrounding the facility as an extension of the classroom, with drop-ins already underway and summer camps starting in July.
