Good morning, Saint John! A guy in England just came out of retirement to chase a wheel of cheese down a hill at full speed… and lost to a German YouTuber. Honestly, chasing runaway cheese down King Street after a few patio beers sounds like a pretty solid summer weekend around here too. 🧀

Here’s what we’re hearing today:

  • Move over, buddy 🚓

  • A smarter way to money 💰

  • More Retail Drive updates 🚦

Let’s get it!

The Port City Beer Run may be sold out… but the warm-up lap is very much open.

Participants will hit Picaroons, Trailway, Big Tide, Woodchucks, Gahan, and Wasted Day, while Sumac & Thyme joins the route with a treat for anyone smart enough to avoid doing six brewery stops on an empty stomach.

Proceeds this year support the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation.

NEWS NOTES

🚓 The move over reminder returns

Flashing lights on the shoulder usually mean somebody’s already having a worse day than you. Saint John Police are hoping drivers keep that in mind during a “Slow Down, Move Over” campaign running May 27-28.

The focus is on reminding motorists to ease off the gas around stopped emergency vehicles, tow trucks, utility crews, and roadside workers. Under New Brunswick law, drivers must slow to half the posted speed limit, proceed cautiously, and move over a lane when it’s safe.

Police say the campaign will include education and enforcement across the city, so the person treating the highway like a slalom course around tow trucks may end up funding the province a little extra this week.

🧾 A new tool for money stuff

Buying a house, comparing insurance, wondering if your TFSA is actually doing anything…New Brunswick’s financial regulator just launched a new website meant to help people make sense of all of it without immediately spiralling.

The site is designed to help New Brunswickers navigate big money moments, from first jobs to retirement planning, while also explaining things like credit, borrowing, and investing in plain language.

🚧 One less Retail Drive intersection

The City is moving ahead with plans to officially eliminate the old Retail Drive intersection off Rothesay Avenue, part of the big realignment project that wrapped up last fall and attempted to make that entire area slightly less of a daily patience test.

A few nearby residents raised concerns about traffic and possible future development, but city staff said this vote is strictly about turning the rebuilt roadway into an official public street. Council gets the final say next. ($)

Expect traditional performances, workshops, handmade goods, balloon twisting, flower crown making, and plenty of incredible food from noon-4pm. Admission is by donation, with funds supporting humanitarian aid and local Ukrainian initiatives.

NB Songwriters Spring Showcase | May 30
Twenty New Brunswick performers will take over Wasted Day Brewing for a full afternoon and evening of original music during this free public showcase hosted by the Songwriters Association of New Brunswick. Things kick off at 12:30pm and run into the evening, making this a pretty solid excuse to spend Saturday parked on a patio listening to local talent.

Family Fun Day – National AccessAbility Week Kick-Off | May 31
The Saint John Ability Advisory Committee is kicking off National AccessAbility Week with an inclusive Family Fun Day at the Irving Oil Field House. The free event runs 11am-2pm and will feature games, a bouncy castle, face painting, crafts, community organizations, and disability-related services from across the province. There’s also a quiet room, refreshments, cake, and a free BBQ courtesy of the Kiwanis Aktion Club, which honestly sounds like a pretty strong Sunday lineup.

Flower Swap at Rothesay Commons | June 6
Not Your Grandma’s Craft Club is bringing a community flower swap to Rothesay Commons next month, and honestly, it sounds pretty wholesome. The free event runs 10-11am and invites people to bring cut flowers from gardens, grocery stores, or wherever they can get their hands on them, then swap and mix blooms with others to build custom bouquets. It’s open to all ages and feels like the kind of Saturday morning activity that could accidentally become someone’s entire personality for the summer.

Fly or Dine Raffle Partnership Program | June 30 - Nov. 2
The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Saint John is looking for local sports teams and community groups to get involved in this year’s Fly or Dine Raffle fundraiser. Participating groups will receive 50 per cent of proceeds from the tickets they sell, helping raise money for everything from uniforms and travel to community programming. The raffle launches June 30 and runs through Nov. 2, with organizers calling it a win-win for local organizations and one of the country’s oldest Boys & Girls Clubs.
