🌨️ Flake news: you need a shovel

Good morning Saint John! Today is National Mutt Day and if you’re like us and can’t live without dogs, it just so happens the SPCA has launched their 2026 pet calendar campaign. Help take care of local animals and always have a picture on the wall that lifts your spirits when the boss is hounding you 🐶.

Here’s what we’re chewing on today:

  • Hope you got your winter tires on ⛄

  • Who’s singing for supper this year 🥫

  • If only passing go was like parking on Sydney st. 🎲

Let’s dig in!

NEWS NOTES

❄️ Here comes the snow

Do yourself a favour and pull the shovels out before you head out this morning because you’re probably coming home to use them. Snow’s supposed to kick in this afternoon and pick up tonight. Inland folks could see 10 to 15 cm. Saint John will get the usual Fundy drizzle mixed in, but the roads are still going to be a mess on the way home and we all know everyone forgets what it’s like to drive in the snow.

✈️ Saint John Airport gets a new captain

Court Edeburn is now steering the plane at YSJ. The airport officially welcomed him as its new CEO today after a national search, and he’s bringing a suitcase full of experience from big-name stops like Air Canada and the Rocky Mountaineer. Edeburn is known for keeping passengers safe, happy, and on time…basically everything you want from someone in charge of getting you to your holiday flights without a meltdown. The airport board says his people-first style and operational chops are just what YSJ needs for its next chapter.

🅿️ New parking options uptown

This week brings some changes to the Sydney Street Parking Lot. Monthly parkers are getting shuffled to a corner, the old front spots are now private, and the rest are metered. The bright side is after 6pm on weekdays plus all weekends and holidays parking is free. Evening errands suddenly feel like landing on Free Parking in Monopoly…if only there was a pile of cash to grab in the middle of King Square.

🎸 Matt Andersen pops into SJ for a lunchtime set

Matt Andersen is swinging through Brunswick Square on December 11 for a free lunchtime show as part of CBC’s Singing for Supper fundraiser. It’s a rare chance to catch one of New Brunswick’s biggest voices while you’re grabbing a sandwich.

Admission is free and donations for local food banks will be collected. Sure you’ve seen him at AREA 506, or belting it out at the Imperial Theatre, but when will you ever get to see him sleighing that guitar at the bottom of the escalator at Brunswick Square?

EVENTS
What’s Happenin’

Today’s events come straight from our readers. If you’ve got an event coming up, be sure to send it our way!

International Day of Persons with Disabilities | Cancelled
A quick update for readers, the events we shared yesterday for December 3, including the flag-raising at City Hall and the Human Library at the Free Public Library, have been cancelled because of the weather forecast.

Gabriel’s Message Christmas Concert | December 6
Two powerhouse choirs, Cantores Celestes Maritimes and the Saint John Men’s Chorus, are teaming up for a big, bright night of Christmas music at Stella Maris Church. Expect everything from Britten’s Ceremony of Carols to festive favourites like Deck the Hall, plus strings, percussion, and a full-choir Hallelujah Chorus. General admission is $25, wheelchair accessible, and a $500 donation goes to a local charity. Tickets available by email.

Christmas Pancake Breakfast | December 6
Hillcrest Church is flipping pancakes again on Lancaster Ave., and they’re making a full morning of it. From 9–11am, families can roll in for breakfast and stay for face painting, Christmas crafts, games, and photo ops, the kind of low-key holiday fun that keeps kids busy and parents caffeinated. It’s their annual tradition, and always an easy way to ease into a December Saturday.

YMCA Basketball League | January 10–March 28
They’re throwing open the gym for a 3-on-3 co-ed house league built for anyone who wants a little competition with their cardio. Players 16+ can hit the court Saturday nights from 8–10pm, whether they’ve got a killer crossover or just want to stay moving this winter. Members pay $25, non-members $65, and registration is open now. More details and sign-up link here.

Come Together Beatles Tribute | January 17
If you’ve got a Beatles fan on your list, this is an easy win. The Come Together fundraiser is back at the Imperial after selling out last year, with a full night of live Beatles hits, games, and a whole lot of community spirit in support of the KV Food Basket. It’s the kind of night where everyone ends up singing along. The show starts at 7:30pm. Tickets are $40 for adults and $30 for youth.

Rocmaura Curling FUNspiel | February 7
Teams are already forming for Rocmaura’s annual FUNspiel at the Carleton Curling Rink, where the vibe is more “good times” than “Olympic pressure.” For $200 a team, you get two 4-end games (one morning, one afternoon), a Subway lunch, a silent auction, and a 50/50, all in support of recreation and entertainment programs for Rocmaura residents. Spots go fast, so call 506-643-7090 or email [email protected] to register.
