NEWS NOTES

🔑 Saint John Housing Market Sees New Listings Spike

Saint John’s housing market got a little crowded in September. Fewer homes sold, down 4.6 per cent from last year, but new listings hit a five-year high, giving buyers more options and sellers a bit more competition.

The benchmark single-family price rose to $328,600, townhouses dropped to $249,000, and apartments ticked up to $293,900. Total sales across the province reached $273.9 million.

Active listings hit 3,588, the most for a September since 2020. At the current pace, it would take about 4.5 months to sell everything. Housing board chair Justin Morehouse says the market is edging toward balance, though sellers still hold a slight advantage.

🏡 Radon Kits Fly Off Shelves in Saint John

Free radon test kits hit libraries this week and, in a lot of locations, were gone in a single day. One in four homes in New Brunswick has high radon, the invisible gas that’s the second-leading cause of lung cancer and the top cause for non-smokers. More kits are on the way, but for now Saint John homeowners should keep an eye on their library and consider professional testing and mitigation if their results come back high.

✌️ Who’s Your Local Peacemaker?

The YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick is looking for locals who make life a little better for everyone. Nominations are open for the 2025 YMCA Peace Medallion, which celebrates everyday people who bring the P-E-A-C-E — participation, empathy, advocacy, community, and empowerment.

If you know someone quietly building bridges in the community, nominate them by October 29. Winners will be recognized during Peace Week, November 16-23.

🏆 Top Clicks of the Week

Wednesday - Free radon tests now available at all NB Libraries
Thursday - Stretch it out with some gentle yoga

LOCAL BUSINESS

đź’• In Pursuit Turns 12!

Twelve years ago, In Pursuit rolled onto the scene in a bright pink truck that popped up at markets and festivals around the province. Owner Dominique Leger traded her wheels for bricks and mortar when she opened a storefront on Prince William in 2020 before settling into her current corner location at King and Canterbury on April 19, 2022.

She says the biggest lesson from 12 years in business has been to always be ready to pivot. “Entrepreneurship is a ride like nothing else and you never know what’s around the corner,” she said. What kept her inspired? “I wanted to make a lasting impression on Saint John while I’m here,” she said. “If you’re going to take up space somewhere, it’s your responsibility to make it better than you found it.”

In Pursuit celebrates 12 years tomorrow (Oct. 18) from 10am to 5pm with Scratch & Save deals up to 40% off, permanent jewelry by Cedar Rose Beauty, blooms from Galbraith Florists, a free gift for the first 12 shoppers and of course, cake.

Stop by 20 King Street and help celebrate a Saint John original!

What’s Happenin’

WHAT WE’RE DOING THIS WEEKEND

Capital Art Sale | October 16-18
Market Square is about to get colorful with a gallery-style showcase of local artists. Paintings, photography, pottery, jewelry, and prints are all on display, most under $100. Opening night is Thursday, 6-9pm, with regular hours Friday and Saturday, 10am-8pm. Free to browse, fun to explore, and a great way to support local talent while adding a pop of art to your space.

Saint John Jewish Film Festival | October 18-23
The Twelfth Annual Saint John Jewish Film Festival is back! Catch five films at the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum, in person or online, with screenings starting at 7pm. Tickets are $10 per film or $40 for a full festival pass. Proceeds support the museum’s work preserving the city’s Jewish history, making it a week of great films and a meaningful way to connect with local culture.

QSFM Fine Craft Festival | October 18
Beautiful Queen Square comes alive with the QSFM Fine Craft Festival, an outdoor celebration of local makers and artists. Set among Victorian buildings, leafy trees, and open lawns, you’ll find unique handmade treasures to admire or take home. The festival runs Saturday, 9am-3pm, with a rain date on October 25. Perfect for a morning stroll while supporting Saint John’s creative community.

Fall Fun at the City Market | October 18
Saturdays at the Saint John City Market are all about local fun. This weekend, make a free spooky paper lantern with Hampton Creations from 11am-3pm, then stick around for live music from Jason Robertson, 2-4pm. With pop-up vendors, local favourites, and fall flavours filling the aisles, it’s the perfect Saturday stop downtown. The market’s open 7:30am-5pm.

Sea Dogs vs. Foreurs | October 18
The season is in full swing this weekend as the Saint John Sea Dogs take on the Val-d’Or Foreurs. Fans can expect fast-paced hockey, big hits, and plenty of goals. The action starts at 7pm and don’t forget the ice cream and fries!

Halloween Skate with the Sea Dogs | October 19
Grab your skates and your costume (helmet required!) for a fun Halloween Skate at the Summit Centre in Hampton from 12:30-1:30pm. After hitting the ice, kids and fans can meet the Sea Dogs for autographs and photos in the community room. Make sure your costume is skate-friendly and get ready for a festive, fast-moving hour of Halloween fun on the ice!

Trunk or Treat | October 19
EXIT Realty is transforming its “Greystone Castle” into a Halloween wonderland for its 4th Annual Trunk or Treat. From 5-7pm, families can wander through decorated car trunks, score candy, and even tour the not-so-haunted castle at 1020 Rothesay Rd. Admission’s a non-perishable food item for the local food bank…because doing good and eating candy is a solid combo. Costumes encouraged, ghosts optional.

WHERE WERE WE WEDNESDAY? 📸

📍 On Wednesday we shared this throwback hanging near what I’ve dubbed the best public bathrooms in the city. Yes, we’ve shown it before, but something about that day just called for a rerun. You can spot versions of it around town, but this one’s on the mezzanine level of the Delta Hotel uptown. Shoutout to Cheri A., Jenn W., and Cynthia P. for nailing it!
