🧐 Can you spot a lie online?

Good Morning Saint John, Patios are popping like dandelions and people are suddenly sipping sours at sidewalk tables. Call it official….patio season is here! 🍻

Here’s what else is floating around this morning:

  • Renters can recycle now 🏘️

  • Can you spot misinformation online? 🕵️‍♂️

  • We want your fiddlehead recipe! 🥬

Have a great weekend!

NEWS NOTES

♻️ Hey, renters, it’s your turn to recycle!

If you live in an apartment or condo with more than four units, you finally get curbside recycling pickup starting this month, and yes, your building has to participate. The City passed a new by-law that puts the onus on property managers and landlords to register by May 31 for the free service. So go ahead, send a friendly "Just checking…are we registered for recycling?" text to your building manager.

The bins and pickup come at no cost (bless), and it’s all thanks to a provincial program through Circular Materials. It’s good news for the planet and your conscience when you toss that empty salsa jar.

Details and info session dates are right here, or call the city at (506) 658-4455 if your super claims they’ve “never heard of it.”

🏃‍♀️ parkrun is coming to Fort La Tour

A global movement is jogging its way into Saint John. Starting May 17, the city will host a weekly parkrun, a free, timed 5K that happens every Saturday at 9am, starting from Fort La Tour. parkrun events are open to runners, walkers, stroller-pushers, dog-draggers…basically anyone looking to move a little and meet some friendly faces. No fee, no pressure, and no finish line expectations. Just register once and show up. Organized entirely by volunteers, parkrun is as much about community as it is about cardio. The local team is still looking for volunteers and early joiners to help get things rolling. Learn more or sign up at parkrun.ca/fortlatour, or connect with the team on their Facebook page.

🌐 Sorting fact from fake online

How do you know what’s real anymore? From deepfakes to clickbait headlines, even the savviest scroll can fall for a digital dupe. A free session next week at the Saint John Free Public Library will tackle that exact problem…how misinformation spreads online, and how to spot it before it spreads to you. The talk will be led by Jake van der Laan, a UNB computer science prof and cybersecurity expert. Topics include AI-generated content, algorithm-driven filter bubbles, and how to think twice before you click “share.” The event runs May 15 from 6 to 7:30pm, and it’s open to everyone.

LOCAL BUSINESS
FOODIE FRIDAY

🍃 Forks Out for Fiddleheads

Spring is here, and you know that means it’s fiddlehead season! We’re planning a delicious feature on this local delicacy, and we need YOU to help us make it extra special. Do you have a family recipe for fiddleheads? Maybe a wild seasoning combo that’s guaranteed to knock anyone’s socks off? Or perhaps you swear by the way your Nan used to cook them (because let’s be honest, Nan always knew best)?

We’re chatting with a local chef to get their fancy take, but we want to see how you do it at home. If your fiddlehead prep is legendary, or just the way it is, we want to put it side by side with the chef’s version and let the community decide…should they be fancy or familiar?

Send us your recipe (or just tell us what makes yours so good) by Thursday, and you might just see your creation in the spotlight. Hit reply or fill out our submission form.

Reach local families and make an impression. Grab your spot in our newsletter today!

LOCAL PICS
WHERE WERE WE WEDNESDAY? 📸

📍 On Wednesday we shared this picture of a seagull chillin’ on a Corolla and asked you where it is. The answer is the Trinity parking lot off Charlotte street between RBC and Trinity Church ( you can see the Union Club in behind). Shout out to Alan & Anne, Bryn, and Pat for guessing correctly. Honourable mention to Patricia, Adrienne, Lorraine and Scott for being damn close!
