Saint John’s Games get a funding boost 🏅
The province has committed $11.85 million to the 2029 Canada Summer Games, which Saint John and Moncton will host together. Of that, $8.85 million will cover the work of putting on the Games, from transportation and security to volunteers and venues. Another $3 million is earmarked for facility and infrastructure upgrades.
About 4,600 athletes, coaches and managers are expected to take part. The province projects a $200-million boost to New Brunswick’s economy, though that’s a forecast, not money in the bank. For Saint John, it’ll be the first time hosting the Summer Games since 1985.
Online scams hit close to home 📱
Saint John police say reports of fake job offers, cryptocurrency fraud and online extortion added up to nearly $200,000 in a single day. The pitches can start on messaging apps, then turn into requests for money, extra fees or crypto. Some scammers threaten to release private or AI-generated images unless they’re paid again.
A job that asks you to pay to get hired is a big red flag. Police say to check offers independently, talk to someone you trust before sending money and report suspected fraud to police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. If someone is threatening you, save the messages and stop paying. There’s no shame in reporting it.

Saint John Sea Dogs vs. Moncton Wildcats | September 25
The provincial rivalry returns to TD Station as the Saint John Sea Dogs welcome the Moncton Wildcats. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m., giving local fans their first Friday-night hockey fix of the new season.
Balysto Steelband Concert | September 26
Balysto Steelband will fill St. Luke’s Anglican Church with the sounds of steel pan Saturday afternoon. The concert runs from 1–2:30 p.m. at 369 Main Street in Saint John. Admission is by freewill offering, with proceeds supporting Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton and the Balysto Steelband Tuning and Transportation Fund. The sanctuary is accessible by stairs and elevator.
KV Beer Run | September 26
The KV Legion is marking its 80th birthday with a five or 10-kilometre run followed by local beverage samples, a DJ, barbecue and food trucks. Registration begins at 10 a.m. at 8 River Road in Rothesay. The 10K starts at 10:40 a.m. and the 5K at 11 a.m. Race and tasting tickets cost $50.
Sip & Savour | September 26
Beer, wine, spirits, alcohol-free drinks and charcuterie are taking over the Market Square Atrium in support of the Rocmaura Foundation. VIP admission begins at 6 p.m., followed by general admission at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $150 for VIP or $75 for general admission, with auctions, draws and a safe-ride-home program included.*
Bad Words for Uptown Fridge | September 26
Stand-up is stocking the Uptown Fridge. Michael Harrison headlines a charity comedy show at Wasted Day Brewing with featured comic Josh Kotsabasakis and host Michelle Lynn Petite. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. at 37 Water Street. Advance tickets cost $20 or $25 at the door, with $5 from every ticket supporting the community fridge.
SOS: The ABBA Experience | September 27
SOS brings the songs, costumes and spectacle of ABBA to Imperial Theatre Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The tribute show invites the audience to sing and dance along to the Swedish group’s biggest hits, making spectators part of the performance. Tickets cost $55.70 for an evening with plenty of music and, presumably, several sequins.
