NEWS NOTES
Tax Cuts and Costs Around the Region đ°
Saint John plans its fourth straight tax cut with a three-cent drop to $1.55 per $100 in 2025. While thatâs good news, rising property assessments mean some homeowners may still feel the pinch. The city is also pushing for tax reform to shift more of the burden to heavy industry. (CBC)
In Rothesay, homeowners get a two-cent cut to $1.17 per $100. Rising water and sewer fees might take the shine off, but the $25.2-million budget includes exciting projects like a new wastewater treatment plant and upgraded trails. (CHSJ)
And Grand Bay-Westfield is keeping it interesting. Ward 1 gets a six-cent cut, while Ward 2 sees a 6.5-cent hike. The $8.9-million budget includes a new public works building and other improvements. Sewer rates are creeping up, but itâs all about keeping things running smoothly for the town. (CHSJ)
New Cranes Set Sail for Saint John đ
Big news on the Saint John waterfrontâtwo new cranes are making their way here aboard the Seaway Albatross! These towering newcomers will join the four already at work, bringing the Portâs total to six and making way for even bigger ships and busier docks.
The cranes are serious heavyweights, with a 65-metre reach and the ability to handle wider, larger container ships. Translation? The port will be running smoother than ever, keeping Saint John on the map as a key East Coast hub.
Want to track their journey? Head over to Crane Watch 2024 for the latest updates and get ready to welcome these giants to the waterfront!
Ahoy, Shanty Fans! â
All the fun of the award-winning Fundy Sea Shanty Festival is setting sail for Uptown Saint John this spring! Originally anchored in the charming fishing village of Fundy-St. Martins, the festival has grown and will now kick off the season with maritime music, workshops, and unique dining experiences. This three-day event, running March 20â22, will showcase a fantastic lineup of sea shanties, lively performances, and the spirit of our seafaring heritage. Donât miss it! Tickets go on sale December 6 - get all the details at Spring Tide Shantyfest.
