McDonald’s New Zealand just rolled out a mullet-inspired cheeseburger where it’s a normal burger on one side and an extra slice of cheese hangs out the back. All I can say is that if SJ had a mullet, the east side would probably be the party in the back!

Here’s the lowdown for the day:

  • Sweating for suds this weekend 🍺

  • NB artists getting official status 🖼️

  • Saint John picked its burger king 👑

Let’s get it!

NEWS NOTES

🏃 Beer Run weekend returns Saturday

The Port City Beer Run is back Saturday morning, bringing hundreds of runners, some temporary traffic slowdowns, and a lot of very loud cheering to Saint John streets in support of the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation.

But organizer Nathalie Nadeau says she hopes people don’t just avoid the route, they come out and help create the atmosphere.

“I always look forward to the huge smiles that everyone gets after getting a run in and then celebrating with some of the best drinks in NB!” she said.

The weekend gets rolling tonight with the Port City Beer Mile around uptown, while 2027 Beer Run tickets go on sale May 31 for anyone already planning ahead after this year’s quick sellout.

🎨 New accreditation opens for NB artists

NB artists now have a new thing to add to their to-do list... paperwork.

Saint John-based ArtsLink NB has opened applications for Professional Artist Accreditation, a new designation tied to the province’s Status of the Artist Act. The accreditation is meant to help protect artists’ employment rights and will be required for artists seeking government contracts or commissions in New Brunswick.

Before anyone panics: this isn’t just for people with fancy arts degrees.

“We’ve had many applicants so far, across all artistic disciplines,” ArtsLink’s Amy Ash told SJ Today, adding there are “a lot of different ways” artists can show professional experience and peer recognition.

FOODIE FRIDAY
💬 The Results: Saint John’s Favourite Burgers

Yesterday was International Burger Day, so we asked where to find the best everyday burger in the Saint John region…and you came in HOT with opinions.

The poll itself was one thing, but the comments quickly made something clear: Union House has a very loud fan club.

🍔 Union House was the clear crowd favourite
🍔 Cask & Kettle pulled plenty of love too
🍔 Big D’s, Bob’s Corner Takeout, and Eastbound Burgers all got strong support

And people weren’t shy about defending their picks either.

Some of your comments:

“Union House, and it’s not even close.”
“Trailway’s smash burger. No contest.”
“Cask and Kettle. Yummmm.”
“Big Ds smash box!”
“Chicken by Felix - Deluxe chicken thigh burger!”

One reader may have even launched a tourism campaign for Grand Bay-Westfield:

“In Grand Bay Westfield we have the best burger options in the region hands down.” 😆

And, because we truly believe burgers are one of the best things in life, here’s your full local burger crawl list…
