NEWS NOTES

🧾 NB Power says higher bills are just cold weather and more juice

After months of customer outrage over jaw-dropping winter power bills, NB Power says it’s not the meters’ fault,  it’s just been really cold, people used more power, and rates went up 13%.

A third-party review by KPMG found no signs smart meters were misreading usage. They tested hundreds of meters, including ones flagged by frustrated customers, and say everything came back clean.

In short, NB Power says your bill spiked because December 2024 was up to 16% colder, billing cycles were longer, outages were fewer, and prices climbed.

They’re promising new tools to track energy use and budgeting programs to help. Still not buying it? NB Power says their phone lines are open.

🕯️A Day of Mourning, A Call for Action

Today marks the National Day of Mourning, honouring workers who lost their lives, were injured, or became ill because of their jobs. A ceremony will be held at noon at the Day of Mourning Monument outside the Frank & Ella Hatheway Centre in Rockwood Park, with a wreath-laying and a reception to follow. In 2023, 14 New Brunswickers didn’t make it home from work, a sobering reminder that safety is everyone’s job, and it’s far from done.

🚦King Street closed for construction today

If you're heading uptown this morning, heads up, King Street is closed to traffic between Charlotte and Germain Streets from 7am-5pm today. Crews are working on the new development at 99 King Street and apparently a giant cement truck is gumming up traffic today. Sidewalks are still open for pedestrians, and all businesses are staying open too, you’ll just have to do a little zigzagging if you're driving. Bonus heads-up: Saint John Transit routes are detouring around King Street today as well.

🏉 RugbyFest madness hits Rothesay

Rain, wind, and a few flying tackles...just another RugbyFest weekend at Rothesay Netherwood School. More than 30 teams from New Brunswick, the Maritimes, Quebec, and Ontario battled it out in 7s and 15s games during the 34th annual tournament.

Tournament director David Shiels says players love it so much they come back as coaches. Local captains Anders Barbour and Harlan Eustace say it’s all about heart, hustle, and handshakes, even after you get flattened.
